Bedroom Rug Size & Placement Guide: How to Position a Rug Under Your Bed

What Size Rug Should Go Under a Bed?
A bedroom rug adds warmth, softness and a lovely sense of luxury, especially first thing in the morning when you step out of bed.
Rather than hiding a beautiful rug completely underneath the bed, position it so there is plenty of rug visible along the sides and at the foot.
For a queen bed, a 200 x 290cm rug is a popular starting point, while a larger 240 x 330cm or 250 x 350cm rug creates a more generous look.
For a king bed, we generally recommend looking at the larger sizes. A 250 x 350cm or 300 x 400cm rug can create a beautifully proportioned result, particularly in a spacious bedroom.
One of our favourite placements is to position the rug underneath approximately the lower two-thirds of the bed. This leaves plenty of softness underfoot without unnecessarily hiding the entire rug.
Don't Forget the Space Around Your Rug
Bigger is often better, but that doesn't mean covering every centimetre of flooring.
Leaving some visible flooring around the rug creates a natural border and allows beautiful timber, tiles or other flooring to remain part of the room.
The amount of space you leave will depend on the room. Larger rooms can generally handle a wider border, while smaller rooms may benefit from allowing the rug to fill more of the available floor area.
Rather than following an exact rule, look for balance and proportion.
Try the Painter's Tape Trick
If you're deciding between two sizes, this is one of the easiest things you can do.
Measure the rug dimensions and mark the corners — or even the complete outline — on your floor using painter's tape.
Then stand back.
Walk into the room from different directions. Sit on the sofa. Pull out the dining chairs. Look at how the proposed rug relates to the furniture.
You will quickly get a much better sense of whether the rug feels too small, too large or just right.
And if you're tossing up between two sizes and your room comfortably accommodates both, we will often recommend choosing the larger option.
Choosing the Right Rug Size Online
Shopping for rugs online gives you access to an enormous range of styles, colours, materials and sizes, but measurements become particularly important.
Never judge the size of a rug purely from a styled photograph.
Room photography can make a rug appear larger or smaller depending on the furniture, camera angle and size of the room.
Always check the actual dimensions listed for the rug and measure them against your own space.
At Rug Addiction, we also offer a Rug Visualiser to help you get a better idea of how selected rugs may look within your room.
Still Not Sure What Size Rug You Need?
Sometimes you can measure everything correctly and still be unsure. That's completely normal.
Choosing a rug isn't only about measurements. Colour, pattern, furniture placement, flooring and the overall style of your home all play a part.
