Rug Size Guide
Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug Size
Choosing the right rug size can completely change the way a room looks and feels. A rug that's too small can make a space feel disconnected, while the right size can help define the room, anchor your furniture and bring everything together.
At Rug Addiction, we've been helping customers choose rugs for their homes since 1993. One of the most common questions we're asked is:
“What size rug do I need?”
The answer depends on your room dimensions, furniture placement and how you want the space to feel. Use our rug size guide below as a starting point, and if you're still unsure, our experienced team is always happy to help.
Before You Choose Your Rug Size
Before deciding on a rug, measure both your room and furniture, rather than relying on the room dimensions alone.
A simple way to visualise the size is to mark the proposed rug dimensions on your floor using painter's tape. This allows you to stand back and see how the rug will relate to your furniture before ordering.
As a general rule, when you're deciding between two suitable sizes, the larger rug will often make the room feel more generous and cohesive.
Living Room Rug Size Guide
The living room is one of the most important spaces to get right. Ideally, your rug should visually connect the sofa, occasional chairs and coffee table rather than appearing like a small island in the centre of the room.
Small Living Rooms
For a compact living room, a 160 x 230cm rug may work well, particularly where the rug sits in front of the sofa with the coffee table positioned on top.
Try to avoid choosing a rug that is only slightly larger than the coffee table.
Medium Living Rooms
A 200 x 290cm or 240 x 310cm rug is a popular choice for many Australian living rooms.
Where possible, position at least the front legs of your sofa and occasional chairs on the rug. This helps connect the furniture and creates a more finished look.
Large & Open-Plan Living Rooms
For generous living areas, consider a 300 x 400cm rug or larger.
A large rug allows more—or potentially all—of your furniture to sit on the rug and can beautifully define the living zone within an open-plan home.
Rug Addiction Tip: Don't be afraid of a large rug. In a spacious room, going larger can actually make the room feel more balanced rather than smaller.

Dining Room Rug Size Guide
For a dining room, your rug needs to accommodate both the table and the chairs.
The most important consideration is what happens when someone pulls their chair out.
Ideally, the chairs should remain on the rug rather than catching on its edge.
How Much Bigger Should a Rug Be Than a Dining Table?
As a general guide, allow approximately 60–75cm of rug beyond each side of your dining table.
For example:
| Dining Table | Suggested Starting Rug Size |
|---|---|
| Small 4-seater | 160 x 230cm or 200 x 290cm |
| 6-seater | 200 x 290cm or 240 x 310cm |
| 8-seater | 240 x 310cm or 300 x 400cm |
| Large 8–10 seater | 300 x 400cm or larger |
These are guides only. Always measure your actual table and allow for your chairs before choosing.
Rug Addiction Tip: Pull one dining chair out to the position it would normally be in when someone is seated. Measure from there rather than just measuring your table.
Bedroom Rug Size Guide
A bedroom rug should add softness and warmth where you step out of bed while also visually anchoring the bed.
Queen Bed
For a queen bed, consider approximately:
200 x 290cm – a more compact option.
240 x 310cm – provides greater coverage around the bed.
300 x 400cm – ideal for a generous bedroom where you want a luxurious amount of rug visible.
King Bed
For a king bed, we generally recommend starting with a 240 x 310cm, with 300 x 400cm often providing a more generous and balanced result.
Your rug can sit beneath the entire bed or begin further down so that the rug extends from approximately the lower two-thirds of the bed.
The right option will depend on your room dimensions and bedside furniture.
Rug Addiction Tip: Make sure enough of the rug remains visible around the sides and end of the bed. If almost all of the rug disappears underneath the bed, consider going larger.
Hallway & Hall Runner Size Guide
Hallways require a slightly different approach because both runner width and length matter.
You generally want some flooring visible along each side of the runner rather than completely covering the hallway from wall to wall.
Measure:
1. The total hallway length
2. The hallway width
3. Doorways and openings
4. Where you want the runner to begin and finish
For long or unusual hallways, a standard-size runner may not provide the right fit.
Custom-Length Hall Runners
Rug Addiction specialises in custom-length hall runners, with selected designs supplied on long rolls.
You choose the required length, we cut the runner accordingly and the cut ends are professionally overlocked for a neat, finished appearance.
This is particularly useful for long hallways where standard runner sizes simply don't work.

Choosing a Rug for an Open-Plan Room
Open-plan spaces are where larger rugs really come into their own.
Rather than thinking about the dimensions of the entire room, consider the individual zone you're trying to define.
For example, in an open-plan living and dining area, one large rug beneath the lounge setting can visually establish the living zone while a separate rug defines the dining area.
The rug should relate to the furniture within that zone rather than floating independently in the middle of the floor.
Should My Furniture Sit on or off the Rug?
There's no single rule that works for every room, but these are useful starting points:
Living room: Aim for at least the front legs of the main furniture to sit on the rug.
Dining room: The table and chairs should sit on the rug, including when the chairs are pulled out for seating.
Bedroom: Position the rug so there is a comfortable amount visible at the sides and foot of the bed.
Hallway: Leave some flooring visible around the runner wherever possible.
The goal is to make the rug and furniture feel connected rather than separate.

Rug Size FAQs
What is the most popular rug size for a living room?
It depends on the size and layout of the room, but 200 x 290cm and 240 x 310cm are useful sizes for many living spaces. Larger rooms may be better suited to a 300 x 400cm rug.
Is it better to buy a rug that's too big or too small?
The rug still needs to fit comfortably within the room, but a slightly larger rug will often look more balanced than one that's noticeably too small.
How do I know what a rug will look like in my room?
Use painter's tape to mark the rug dimensions on your floor. This is one of the easiest ways to visualise how much space the rug will occupy.
You can also use our 3D Room Visualiser Tool for eligible rugs or contact our team for advice.
What size rug should go under a dining table?
Measure the table and then allow approximately 60–75cm beyond each side so your dining chairs have room to remain on the rug when pulled out.
Can Rug Addiction help me choose a rug size?
