Risk-taker par excellence, style maven extraordinaire, her most exhilarating legacy is a design archive making waves around the world today. But this is where her legend begins.
Born in 1899 in a remote rural corner of Australia’s Queensland, Florence’s death was a violent murder at the age of 78. In between, she lived a series of vivid, fantastic lives.
Charismatically fearless from word go, she spent the roaring Twenties singing across the Far East’s colonial reaches and ran a finishing school in Shanghai. In London, she became “Madame Pellier”, a French couturier proud to dress the rich and famous. She moved back to Australia as an aristocratic English lady; an entrepreneur, society figurehead and landscape painter.
With every incarnation Florence became somebody new - new hair colour, new accent, new history. Even, on occasion, new name. At the age of 60 she did it again, launching in Sydney her defining venture - an internationally-successful, luxury, hand-print wallpaper business.
She announced she would colour Australia. In so doing she re-drew the world. Everywhere she had been and everything she had seen found voice in a whirlwind of creativity. Florence’s archive grew to over 500 images ranging from tapestries to geometrics, florals, psychedelic, and delightfully eccentric chinoiserie.
Yet however dynamic and diverse her designs became, her personality was more compelling still.
Upon her death, Florence disappeared. Today, thanks to the passion of Signature Design Archive, she is stepping back on to the international stage with designs that transcend fashion – work so boldly glamorous and versatile it speaks to innovators in every field.
“Her patterns are exceptional. They exist on the cusp of a paradox,” says British designer Ilse Crawford. “Every time you think you can sum them up, you can’t.”

And behind each image is the woman herself, an endlessly restless spirit. Her eye was exquisite, her appeal fascinating, and her approach at times very naughty indeed.

What widths are available?
Our custom hall runners are available in widths including 66cm, 80cm and selected 1 metre-wide options. The exact width is displayed on each product page.
How do I measure my hallway?
Measure the length and width of your hallway, then decide where you want the runner to begin and finish. Leaving some flooring visible around the runner usually creates a balanced appearance.
Check that the selected width provides clearance for doorways and allows a reasonably even border of flooring along each side.
How long can my custom runner be?
Our runners are cut from long continuous rolls, generally measuring approximately 20–25 metres. Maximum available length depends on the design and remaining stock, so please contact us before ordering an especially long runner.
How are the ends finished?
Once the runner is cut, both ends are professionally overlocked with coordinating thread. This helps prevent fraying and provides a neat, finished appearance.
What materials are available?
The collection includes polypropylene, polyester, nylon and wool runners. Synthetic fibres are practical for busy homes, while wool provides natural softness, warmth and lasting appeal. Check each product description for its exact composition and care instructions.
Can I order a sample?
Samples are available for selected designs. Please contact our team to confirm sample availability before placing your custom order.
Do custom runners have a non-slip backing?
Some runners have an integrated rubber backing, while others require a separate non-slip underlay. Check the individual product description or ask our team if you are uncertain.
We recommend a suitable non-slip pad beneath runners placed on hard flooring to help minimise movement and protect both the runner and floor.
Can custom hall runners be used on stairs?
Some runner styles may be suitable for professional stair installation, but suitability depends on the material, construction and staircase. Speak with our team and a qualified installer before ordering a runner for stairs.
How long will my order take?
Please allow approximately 5–7 business days for cutting and overlocking before dispatch. Delivery time is additional and will depend on your location and courier service.
Can I return a custom hall runner?
Custom hall runners cannot be returned for change of mind because they are cut and finished specifically to your selected length. We recommend ordering a sample where available or contacting us for advice before purchasing.
